Digital Marketing Internships that will get you started in the field

6 mins read

Internships are a powerful source for students to understand the path they want to take, by actually working in the field and experimenting with all options available. Most of the time, browsing on websites and hiring platforms might not get you the kind of internship you’re wishing for.

A bit of determination and courage to send a direct email to the company you’re focused on might do the job better than browsing websites. That’s what Cătălina did, she got our contact details, stepped out of her comfort zone and showed us how determined she was in getting an internship at Grapefruit.

The old-fashioned websites and forums that have been on the internet since the beginning of time didn’t work for me, as I couldn’t find anything useful. So, what did I do? First of all, I signed up for the ‘ATELIERE’ event where companies held pieces of training in the marketing field. After attending a workshop held by Grapefruit I found my company. Next, I shared my plans with my parents and they gave me a helpful nudge. Through their network, they managed to find the address of the HR person and the Managing Director, but the rest was up to me. It was frightening, but I managed to send an email and get an interview. The interview was short, direct and to the point and I felt at ease when I found out that I’m starting Monday. The first conclusion I draw was that stepping out of your comfort zone, and having a precise goal helps a lot in your journey.

Cătălina Georgescu, former Digital Marketing Intern at Grapefruit

As we are passionate about our work, we’re trying to offer our interns the same mindset: to find something they love and stick to it until they’re the best. After she told us what her end-goals were with this internship, we first offered her the Business Model Generation book by Alexander Osterwalder and Yves Pigneur. She had to read it within a week and then we could start the actual internship after she gained a bit of knowledge about the field. Next Monday the book was read, and Cătălina started her internship in the Digital Strategy Department for the next 2 weeks. We focus on teaching our interns not only about the job itself but also things to be valued if they want to progress and learn constantly.

As a mere high school student, I was grateful for their will to teach me all sorts of things related to businesses and promotional campaigns. During the first week, I realized that you must strive if you want to keep climbing the career ladder. I was amazed at how satisfying it was to complete tasks and to feel and see the actual progress.

She took the Digital Workshop Certificate from Google, where she learned about SEO, SEM, customer journeys, value propositions, social-media and so on. In the first week of learning with Google, we assigned her to her first promotional campaign. We are focused on providing all the tools necessary and try to find time to explain and show our interns best practices, answer questions and be there whenever they need it. The digital field can be a bit confusing without a clear direction and rapid answers, so we are trying our best to provide the most supportive environment for learning and cultivating passion.

I am now in the middle of my second week here and I am working on a promotional campaign. I am using only the knowledge I gained during the first week through the Digital Workshop Certificate. What I enjoy the most at Grapefruit is the freedom to be creative, to ask as many questions as you want and to work in your own rhythm. Besides all the technical tasks that I have, I also get some insights into the field of digital consultancy and into an agency’s environment.

Besides the technical knowledge we’re providing, we’re also trying to set an example for interns.  One-third of a full-time employee’s life is spent at work, so we’re trying to do our best to make it count. A calm environment where everyone communicates efficiently and works together towards the same goal, with the same amount of passion. We embrace creativity, answer questions and accept challenges, that’s what we want to teach future generations of employees.

After I got to know them a little better, I realized that they are also extremely warm-hearted. Grapefruit is like a second home for them and when they hire someone, they welcome that certain person with their arms wide open. The fact that they are not only co-workers, but also friends, and they manage to complete tasks as if they are only one single entity is simply amazing. They are all very passionate, ambitious and dedicated and I would love to find such wonderful individuals at any of my future jobs

To wrap it up, here’s Catalina’s piece of advice for anyone that wants an internship but isn’t quite sure:

”I would wholeheartedly recommend to anyone to get an internship at a company in the field they like. Such an amazing experience might only show up once or twice in a lifetime. If it doesn’t, you can always try to make it happen yourself. Also, when you become an intern make the most out of it. Ask questions, talk with people about their jobs and don’t forget to do your best at the tasks you are given.
